Culebrita Island: The Spot the Ferry Can't Reach

2 min read

Quick Answer: Culebrita Island sits south of Culebra's main island and has no ferry service at all — the only way to reach it is by private boat. Leisure Boat Experience guests can add Culebrita to a full-day Culebra charter departing from Fajardo, a roughly 6-hour trip with about a 1-hour crossing each way to Culebra.

Why Culebrita Is Different from the Rest of Culebra

Culebra's main island has some ferry access and day-tripper traffic. Culebrita doesn't. There's no public ferry route to it — the only guests who see it are the ones who arrive by private boat.

That's what makes it worth adding to a charter rather than treating it as a stop everyone gets to eventually: it stays quieter simply because fewer people can reach it at all.

How It Fits Into a Culebra Charter

Culebrita isn't booked as a separate trip — it's an addition to the full-day Culebra charter, which departs from Safe Harbor Puerto del Rey Marina and runs about 6 hours round trip, including the roughly 1-hour crossing each way.

The standard Culebra full-day charter already anchors at the island's southern beaches, some of the most secluded in the Caribbean. Adding Culebrita extends that day to include the one spot even most Culebra visitors never see.

What's Included on the Trip

The Culebra charter includes a private 36-foot Albemarle Carolina Classic Express Yacht for up to 6 guests, a USCG-licensed captain and mate, snacks and a light lunch, snorkeling gear, floatation devices, and full security equipment. Gratuity and alcoholic beverages are not included, though you're welcome to bring your own drinks aboard (no red wine or glassware permitted).

Planning Around the Open Water Crossing

The ride to Culebra is itself part of the day — about an hour each way of open water, salt air, and genuine offshore sailing aboard a boat built for exactly that kind of crossing.

Check-in is at least 30 minutes before departure at Safe Harbor Puerto del Rey Marina, the largest marina in the Caribbean and one of only two Blue Flag-certified marinas in Puerto Rico.
